Last week on my Instagram profile @everywherehistory I shared more photos of Brisbane heritage. The first photo was from my walk at West End when I was exploring industrial part of the suburb. Followed with a photo of Kangaroo Point Cliffs with Naval Stores and St Mary’s Anglican Church, you can read about them on this blog. There were also photos from my bicycle rides – first in Coopers Plains on my way home from work, second from Hornibrook Highway at Brighton and last from Mt Gravatt with a City view. Speaking about the City, there were also 2 images of this area, one of the Brisbane Arcade, and the other one of the Albert Street Uniting Church. The latter photo I took at the clock tower of the City Hall during Brisbane Open House.

Dixon’s Tannery was constructed circa 1893 after the first tannery established by Thomas Coar Dixon in 1869 was destroyed in the 1893 Brisbane floods. After Dixon died in 1908, each of his sons took over one of his two businesses; this tannery at 439 Montague Road and a shoe factory at 406 Montague Road, which was at one time considered to be the largest shoe production company in Australia. The tannery operated for around 77 years before closing in 1970 and the shoe factory closed not long after, in 1973. Both of these successful businesses played a considerable role in the commercial and industrial development of South Brisbane in the early twentieth century and provided employment for many Brisbane residents. The Brisbane Arcade was opened in 1924. It provided a pedestrian and commercial link between Queen and Adelaide Streets. The arcade contained shops with frontages to Adelaide and Queen Streets, 20 shops on the ground level of the arcade, and a further 20 on the first floor. The Brisbane Arcade is important in exhibiting a range of aesthetic characteristics valued by the Brisbane community and those interested in retail design, in particular the quality of its design, use of materials and craftsmanship displayed in the main internal space and street facades its contribution to the central business district townscape, and the Queen Street and Adelaide Street streetscapes. Albert Street Uniting Church was officially opened on 8 November 1889. The first Methodist church in Brisbane, a modest brick chapel, was constructed in 1849 on the corner of Albert Street and Burnett Lane. It was replaced in 1856 by a larger building. By the early 1880s the congregation had grown substantially and in 1884 purchased a site on the corner of Albert and Ann Streets.It is an excellent example of a Victorian Gothic Revival church, climatically adapted with side colonnades and front porch.
